In January, tenor saxophonist CORY WEEDS along with trumpeter CHRIS DAVIS, B3 organist JOEY DEFRANCESCO and drummer BYRON 'WOOKIE' LANDHAM played some gigs at The Cellar in Vancouver, BC. The resulting album "The Many Deeds Of Cory Weeds" has been released online and can (and definitely should) be downloaded now. The album will be coming out on CD, and even will be released soon on VINYL, for all those jazz enthusiasts who dig the old school warmth of records. 8 tracks fill this CD
I for one was in attendance for the Saturday night show, and it blew me away, particularly the nearly 13 minute version of "Corner Kisses". You can actually hear me yelling in appreciation after the song ends! It's features all of the musicians, and has a nice drum solo in the middle by "Wookie".
Being a friend of Cory's for over 30 years, I had the privilege of hanging out prior to the gig at rehearsal, and eating a pre-show meal with the band. Byron was really into the hockey game, he's a Flyers fan, being from Philly and all. The band was trying to keep Cory loose and nerve free, and there were some good pre-gig jokes and banter flying around the table. I enjoyed a few beers on Weeds himself, and then it was showtime!
Picture taken during their run-through prior to the gig on Saturday night..
Tracks are as follows:
1: Juicy Lucy - 10:38
2: Goin Down - 8:31
3: Fine And Dandy - 5:29
4: Fine De L'Affaire - 10:10
5: Corner Kisses - 12:50
6: Boss Bossa - 8:42
7: Sunday In New York - 6:34
8: Roofin It - 10:47
As stated on Cellar Live's website:
The baddest b3 burner in the business, Joey Defrancesco and his long time drummer Byron Wookie Landham join tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds and trumpeter Chris Davis for a burning set of tunes recorded live at The Cellar Restaurant / Jazz Club.
The Many Deeds of Cory Weeds is a rare opportunity to hear Joey Defrancesco really stretch out as the CD contains minimal editing!
"The Many Deeds Of Cory Weeds" is sure to be a hit followup to the Nationally acclaimed "Everything's Coming Up Weeds" which reached as high as #6 on the Jazz Week Charts and was named #32 of the Top 100 Jazz Albums of 2009.
