Friday afternoon I left Pier 69 in Seattle for the Inner Harbour of Victoria B.C. via the Victoria Clipper. The Hip were playing 2 shows in Victoria at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
As I arrived at the arena for the show, my good friend Ryan Awram from 100.3 The Q! was there to greet me. We hung out for an hour before the show started, and I was interviewed by Ryan on air prior to the show about my experience at the Seattle show on Wednesday. I told them my "microphone" story, and talked a bit about the show, and what the fans could expect.
It turns out that they basically played the exact same set list that they played in Seattle on Wednesday, except for 2 songs (Thompson Girl was performed acoustically instead of "The Rules" and Springtime In Vienna replaced Locked In The Trunk Of A Car). I don't know if Gord was just lazy, or if the Seattle show was some sort of "warm up" for the Victoria shows, but it was a little disappointing to get almost the entire set list repeated. Other than that, about 5,000 people got a great show. After the show, Ryan, Steve and I went to a local dive bar for a post Hip show party, and a few beers.
Saturday, I was able to snag a ticket as a guest of Ryan Awram in The Q's private suite. This show was a sellout, over 7,000 people were in attendance. The shows set list was more of what I was expecting on Friday (and more enjoyable). About half of the songs were repeats (but they were good repeats!) and half were different from the previous night. Bobcaygeon, Family Band, Locked In The Trunk Of A Car, Yer Not The Ocean, and Music @ Work were some of the different tunes they pulled out on this night.
Overall, great times were had in Victoria, hanging out with Ryan, eating like a King at Floyd's Diner (twice!), Milestones (by the inner harbour), Ali Baba Pizza, and getting treated to an authentic Mexican dinner from Ryan's friend Thelma. Got to meet another great Tragically Hip fan named Tindy who works for The Q!, and a special thanks to her for helping me score a ticket to the Friday show!
